Cursor Ultra vs Codex Pro 5x: where should a $100 budget go?

Cursor Ultra is $200, not a recurring $100 plan. This August 2026 comparison tests the pricing math against Codex Pro 5x and explains the real choice.

If your Cursor account really offers Ultra for US$100 for the first month, take it over Codex Pro 5x only when you want Cursor’s editor, Tab, visual diff review, cloud agents, and Composer for an intensive one-month project. Do not treat that offer as a permanent same-price comparison. Cursor’s public Ultra price is US$200 per month; the US$100 figure comes from account-specific referral or retention offers that Cursor does not promise on its pricing page. For a stable US$100 monthly budget, Codex Pro 5x is the honest default for terminal-first and delegated coding, while the comparable recurring Cursor purchase is Pro+ at US$60 plus measured on-demand usage. This article answers one narrow question: where should a US$100 AI-coding budget go when a temporary Cursor Ultra discount appears? Prices are US list prices before tax, checked on August 3, 2026. Cursor’s public page lists Pro at US$20, Pro+ at US$60, and Ultra at US$200. OpenAI lists Pro 5x at US$100 and Pro 20x at US$200. Both vendors can vary regional taxes and eligibility.

First correct the misleading “same US$100” premise

The r/cursor thread that prompted this comparison asks whether to buy “Cursor Ultra 20x for US$100 first month” or keep “Codex 5x for US$100.” That is a real purchasing problem, but the headline hides two different price types:

  • Codex Pro 5x: a public recurring tier at US$100 per month.
  • Cursor Ultra: a public recurring tier at US$200 per month, sometimes presented to specific users at 50% off for one month.

Cursor’s pricing page and plan documentation do not promise a universal US$100 Ultra tier. Replies in the originating thread describe referral links or a retention offer shown near cancellation. Those reports explain how some people see the price; they do not establish a benefit available to every reader.

This distinction changes the recommendation. A one-month discount can be a useful trial. It cannot support a twelve-month budget comparison. At renewal, Cursor Ultra costs US$2,400 per year before tax; Codex Pro 5x costs US$1,200 if prices remain unchanged.

What each plan publishes—and what it does not

Cursor Ultra: a fixed monthly price and dollar allowance

Cursor says Ultra costs US$200 per month and includes:

  • US$400 of guaranteed API-agent usage at model inference prices;
  • additional Auto + Composer usage described as “generous”;
  • the editor, Tab completion, frontier-model access, MCP, skills, hooks, cloud agents, and priority access to new features.

The US$400 figure is auditable. The separate first-party pool is not published as a guaranteed token quantity, so no independent article can promise exactly how many Composer tasks Ultra will complete. The dashboard is the source of truth for an active account.

Cursor also says daily agent users typically consume US$60–US$100 of total usage, while power users running multiple agents or automation often exceed US$200. That guidance argues against jumping directly from Pro to Ultra: first measure a representative month.

Codex Pro 5x: a relative allowance, not a public dollar pool

OpenAI says its US$100 Pro tier gives 5x higher usage than Plus; the US$200 tier gives 20x. Codex usage varies with model, task complexity, repository size, context, and where the task runs. Local messages and cloud tasks share limits, and additional weekly limits may apply.

The Codex rate card does publish token-to-credit rates. For GPT-5.6 Sol, one million uncached input, cached input, and output tokens consume 125, 12.5, and 750 credits respectively. What OpenAI does not publish is a stable Pro 5x credit balance that lets us turn those rates into an exact monthly task count.

That makes “20x versus 5x” a bad comparison. Cursor’s 20x is tied to its Pro tier and resolves to a US$400 guaranteed API allowance. Codex’s 5x is relative to ChatGPT Plus usage and remains subject to task and time-window behavior. The numbers share a suffix, not a unit.

The calculator deliberately outputs null for the Codex Pro 5x included credit balance. Filling that field from a Reddit screenshot or one account’s /status output would turn a temporary personal observation into a false plan guarantee.

We did not exhaust two paid subscriptions. The test machine has authenticated Codex CLI evidence from our July 30 six-defect audit, but it does not have an authenticated Cursor Ultra account. This comparison therefore makes a first-hand pricing conclusion, not a fabricated model-quality or monthly-quota claim.

What community reports add to the official numbers

Reddit supports the need for this comparison but not a universal winner. In the originating July thread, the buyer preferred Cursor’s planning and frontend workflow after using the lower plan, then chose the discounted Ultra month. A separate Ultra-versus-Codex discussion contains two opposing patterns: some developers say planning with frontier models and executing with Composer makes Ultra feel effectively unconstrained; others prefer Codex for long, high-reasoning jobs.

The newer Codex Pro 5x thread adds an important warning: several users report that weekly-limit behavior changed after the five-hour display changed, making the same US$100 tier feel less predictable. That is evidence of user experience, not proof that every account lost a fixed percentage of capacity. OpenAI’s current help still says additional weekly limits may apply.

Composer reports are equally variable. One June Ultra user reported billions of Composer tokens, while others inferred pool sizes from dashboard percentages. Those observations show why standard Composer can stretch far. They do not replace Cursor’s unpublished pool guarantee.

The independent videos we reviewed are better at showing the workflow distinction than subscription accounting. Theo’s three-way discussion emphasizes how IDE-first and autonomous-agent work feel different. Jan Marshal’s same-app exercise shows that an identical brief does not create an identical interaction loop. Neither video exposes synchronized renewal windows or full account ledgers, so we use them as workflow evidence rather than quota facts.

Choose the discounted Cursor month when the editor is the product

Take the US$100 first-month Ultra offer if all of these are true:

  • the offer appears in your own Cursor billing flow before payment;
  • a one-month project benefits from Cursor Tab, visual diffs, rules, cloud agents, or parallel editor workflows;
  • you will use standard Composer for ordinary implementation and reserve expensive frontier models for planning or hard failures;
  • you have decided what happens at the US$200 renewal.

This is strongest for developers who already know Cursor Pro and can name the bottleneck the upgrade removes. Buying Ultra to discover whether you like a VS Code-style editor is backwards; use Hobby or Pro first.

Also disable or cap on-demand billing until you understand the dashboard. Ultra’s included pool is large, but it is not a promise of unlimited use, and expensive frontier models can consume the guaranteed allowance much faster than standard Composer.

Choose Codex Pro 5x for a durable US$100 terminal budget

Codex Pro 5x is the cleaner recurring decision when:

  • your core loop is terminal-first, delegated, or non-interactive;
  • you want Codex desktop, CLI, IDE extension, and eligible cloud work under one account;
  • ChatGPT Pro’s general reasoning, research, and other non-coding features also have value;
  • you can route routine work to Terra or Luna and reserve Sol for tasks that justify its higher credit rate.

Our Codex CLI review found all six seeded defects with no false positives using Sol medium, while also exposing sandbox friction and a 5.94-credit trace. That is a more useful reason to buy Codex than an unexplained 5x badge: the harness, traceability, and model routing match the work.

The caution is quota predictability. Pro 5x is not a fixed US$100 API credit bundle. Record /status, task-level token use, reasoning level, and reset behavior during the first month. If your work repeatedly collides with the weekly allowance, the next decision is not automatically Pro 20x; first check whether narrower prompts, smaller context, or a cheaper model solves the problem.

The recurring US$100 Cursor alternative is Pro+, not Ultra

If the budget ceiling is genuinely US$100, compare Codex Pro 5x with this Cursor configuration:

  1. Cursor Pro+ at US$60, including US$70 of guaranteed API-agent usage.
  2. Keep up to US$40 available for measured on-demand use.
  3. Prefer Composer 2.5 Standard unless faster output has a measurable delivery value.
  4. Upgrade only when dashboard history shows a normal month above US$200 of useful work.

That configuration keeps the editor workflow, avoids a US$200 renewal, and turns the remaining budget into an explicit cap. It is less exciting than a “20x” headline and more defensible for most individual developers.

Final verdict

For one verified promotional month at US$100, Cursor Ultra is the better capacity experiment—if Cursor’s integrated editor is already central to your work. For a repeatable US$100 monthly budget, choose Codex Pro 5x for terminal-first agent work or Cursor Pro+ plus capped on-demand usage for IDE-first work.

Do not compare Cursor “20x” and Codex “5x” as if they were exchange rates. One resolves to a published Cursor dollar allowance; the other is a relative OpenAI subscription limit. The practical test is the same for both: record a month of representative tasks, models, token profiles, failures, and delivered changes before paying for the next tier.
